Role of 16S Ribosomal RNA Analysis in Identification of Microorganisms in Febrile Urinary Tract Infection of Infants

Objectives: To determine the value of 16S ribosomal RNA analysis in microbial identification in febrile infants under six months of age presenting with UTI, compare it with conventional culture results. Methods Young infants under the age of 6 months of age who had suspected UTI from May 2018 to April 2019 had been registered. The 16S RNA results included 16S rRNA amplicon band identification and bacterial identification by sequencing analysis. On electrophoresis, 50 urine samples had a positive 16S rRNA amplicon band. E. ferotii in 36, K. pneumonia in 36, and Shigella flexneri in 1. Conclusion Uropathogen identification using 16S rRNA analysis could be used to treat febrile UTI in young infants clinically in combination with the traditional environment.
